Like a vanilla ice cream to a sorethroat.

As a primary school student, Sam was like any other kid, active and vibrant; naïve and innocent . He was brought up in Malacca by his grandmother. His parents were workaholics. Thus, they hardly spend quality time together. Sam envied his friends when he saw them being chauffeured around by their parents while he had to walk back from school with his sister, Adriene. But of all the things that the world has to offer, Sam had a special gift. A gift in which gave him peace, love, wisdom and strength…

One cold morning on 23rd May, when Sam and Adriene got back home from school, they saw their grandmother crying while talking over the phone. They kept silent, trying to figure out what the phone conversation was about. “Malignant?”, their granny said repeatedly. “What is malignant?”, Sam asked Adriene. “I’m not sure”, Adriene replied. After grandmother hang up the phone, she went to hug both Sam and Adriene. She told them to listen to her carefully. She tried to smile, but her tears gave way Sam knew, that what he is going to hear next will change his life forever…

A few days ago, Sam’s mother, Aunt June, discovered a lump in her left breast. Fearing the worst, she consulted a specialist. She did a biopsy to determine whether the growth was benign or malignant. The results showed that it was malignant. Moreover, it was the last stage! The doctor said she had only a few months to live and she needed to be admitted for further check up. Sam’s heart dropped and tears began flowing out. He has dealt with many blows before in his life but this was unbearable. Sam was angry, frustrated and felt his whole world collapsing. His mother was on the verge of death.

Sam went home that night with an angry soul. He was so disappointed with God for choosing his mother as the victim. He cried, shouted, screamed, with angry tears flowing from his now swollen red eyes. So emotional was he that he even crashed his father’s television with his baseball bat. His father could only look with anguished tears. He knew what Sam was going trough. That night Sam couldn’t sleep. Still angry with God, he started to question God. In exasperation he wrote a letter to God.

“Oh God. Why!? Why……? Of all the people in this fallen world, why does it have to be mom? Haven’t you taken enough from me already? I hate you. You gave me this gift of peace, love, wisdom and strength but its all useless now. Its USELESS NOW!!!! What are you going to do next??!” Sam then cried himself to sleep, his letter soaked in his tears…

The week after, Aunt June had a surgery to remove the cancerous breast. Sam and his father waited outside the operating theatre. Sam was afraid and hoped that the operation would be successful. A few hours passed, Aunt June was rolled out from the operating theatre and into her room. She was still pale and sedated. That night, she recovered from the anesthetics, but though still very weak, she told Sam she had a vision during the operation. She heard God’s voice saying, “Save her! Save her!” and there were angels echoing the message to each other.

Ten years later, Aunt June is still alive and she accepted Christ. She has had a few relapses over the years. However, chemotherapy and prayers kept her alive. Her dream of seeing Sam and Adriene grow up has happened. Sam himself was amazed by all the miracles that have happened. One day when he was on his bed, he went blind suddenly. But he did not feel uneasy. Then a voice came from above. “Sam, my boy. I’m your God. I know what you have gone through. I wept because you cried too. I felt the pain too when you screamed at me. But I love you. And it was never in My plan to ever hurt you. Now My plan is done, and your family is happier together than before, cherish your family as one now.”

Sam then gained his sight back. He just sat there, crying…not with grief now…but with rejoice.
